Pixie smart LEDs deliver a huge 3W of brightness (vs ~0.2W NeoPixels) and chain over 115200 baud serial. Each one has a PIC microcontroller, PWM control, temperature cut-off, and draws up to 1A — fully assembled with M2 mounting holes. Adafruit NeoPixels are bright… sure. But they’re not 3 watts bright — and that’s exactly why you need a Pixie. These chainable smart LEDs are seriously powerful, delivering 3W total output, compared to around 0.2W from a standard NeoPixel. Designed by Ytai Ben-Tsvi, Pixies are made for projects where you want maximum brightness without losing the convenience of addressable control. Each Pixie combines a 3W LED with a built-in Microchip PIC microcontroller. To set the colour, you send data at 115200 baud, using 1 byte per colour. You can also send a longer stream of pixel data and each Pixie will automatically forward the remaining data down the line, so you can chain them like a shift register. Once the colour is set, the Pixie handles all the PWM internally — you only need to resend data when you want the colour to change. For safety, Pixies require regular updates: you must send data at least every 2 seconds, otherwise they’ll time out to prevent the LEDs from staying stuck on. For best results, 1 second updates (or faster) are recommended. Because these LEDs can run hot, Pixies include a temperature cut-off. If the PIC detects the board is getting too warm, it will switch the LED off until the temperature drops back to a safe level. Each Pixie comes fully assembled, with large pads for power wiring (they can draw up to 1A per Pixie) and side mounting holes that fit M2 screws. Nylon M2 screws are recommended to avoid shorting components. You’ll also need thick power wires and a microcontroller capable of sending 115200 baud 8N1 serial data — on its own, the Pixie won’t light up without being driven.
