A speed sensor records the speed of rotating parts such as gears or shafts. Speed ??sensors work with different measuring principles such as optical, magnetic Hall effect or inductive. The speed is recorded without contact. Sensors using the Hall principle can detect the forward and backward movements. The direction of rotation can be detected by the internal signal offset of differently arranged Hall elements in the sensor. A magnet at the end of the shaft is used as a position indicator. This can be integrated in the housing or arranged separately from it without contact. Incremental encoders record rotation and speed by counting repetitive, periodic elementary steps (increments). The direction of rotation can be evaluated by the phase shift of the two offset output signals A and B. Channel A only provides information about the angle covered (number of pulses in a specific time unit), channel B can be used to determine the direction of rotation. Another signal Z or zero channel gives the absolute "zero" position of the encoder shaft and is used as a reference point. Incremental encoders must be referenced after switching on.
