Why do our smartphones lose battery power so quickly? The lithium batteries contained in our devices have a natural life cycle that can be influenced by various factors. One of these is charging overnight (or generally for long periods), which lasts on average eight hours per night and has a negative impact on the capacity of lithium-ion batteries. The battery is kept at its end-of-charge voltage of 4.35 V, even when it has reached 100%, to ensure that it does not discharge during the night. As a result, the battery life can even be halved, forcing us to buy a new battery or a new device.

Innovative technology A team of electronics, mechanical and management engineers from the University of Sapienza in Rome has developed a technology that can prevent the lithium battery in USB-rechargeable, portable devices from remaining at its 4.35-V end-of-charge voltage longer than necessary, and therefore doubling its life.
