OK, so here is one for the collectors, an interesting "piggyback chip" where two memory chips have been physically soldered together to double up on the memory capacity.

This stopgap solution was first used by IBM, but was soon dropped as technology and memory density improved. Obviously the two chips differ in characteristics otherwise they would not work, hence only the top chip is engraved with the part number. You will see that many of the comments on the bulletin boards suggest that 128k x 1 k don't exist....

All I can say is, they are available here in very limited quantities, in the original Siemes anti-static tube which is of course a double height item... 'nuff said !

A real conversation piece, and a bookmark in the development of the memory chip.

Please note to all those amiga / early apple / commodore restorers , don't listen to the bloggers, only use these items if your system had them fitted as standard and you suspect that you have a memory related problem. Simply replacing single deck chips with these double deckers will not double your RAM but probably cause you further problems.
