The SparkFun Qwiic PIR Starter Kit (1µA) is a basic kit that allows you to explore the world of passive infrared (PIR) sensors. These sensors are excellent for detecting motion in a small area around the sensor. This specific kit includes the 1µA SparkFun EKMB1107112 Qwiic PIR which utilizes an EKM-series PIR sensor from Panasonic®. This sensor, paired with an ATTiny84, allows for interaction via I²C with the Qwiic system. The EKMB-series PIR sensors are designed to sense small movements, making them ideal for battery-powered applications due to the low standby current draw of the sensor (1µA).PIR sensors work by monitoring for infrared light coming from objects within their field of view. They activate their signal when motion is detected in their sensing area. This makes them ideal for applications such as automatic device activation upon motion detection. They can be used in home and building automation for energy saving, automated on/off lighting control, security, appliances, and IoT.Panasonic's low-profile PIR motion sensors, with a height of 10.9mm as compared to the standard 14.4mm, provide space savings for constrained designs. These sensors consist of a lens to create various detection zones, an optical filter to block non-infrared light, pyroelectric sensing elements, electromagnetic shielding for all circuitry, and an impedance converter to get an electrical signal. The PIR sensor provides digital output across 32 zones at a detection distance of 5m with a 90° x 90° detection area. This kit also includes a SparkFun RedBoard Qwiic to drive your PIR sensor. The RedBoard Qwiic can be programmed using the Arduino IDE over a USB Micro-B cable (included). Just plug in the board, select "Arduino UNO" from the board menu and you're ready to upload code. To connect your PIR sensor to your RedBoard, we have included a 100mm length Qwiic cable.Note: The sensitivity of passive infrared sensors can be influenced by environmental conditions, so it is recommended to conduct a performance evaluation test under representative conditions. The SparkFun Qwiic Connect System is an ecosystem of I²C sensors, actuators, shields, and cables that make prototyping faster and less prone to error. All Qwiic-enabled boards use a common 1mm pitch, 4-pin JST connector. This reduces the amount of required PCB space, and polarized connections mean you can’t hook it up wrong.Get started with the SparkFun Qwiic PIR Hookup Guide. The kit includes:
