Description The Controller Area Network (CAN) transceivers SN65HVD230, SN65HVD231 and SN65HVD232 are compatible with the specifications of the ISO 11898-2 High Speed CAN Physical Layer Standard (transceiver). These devices are designed for data rates of up to 1 megabit per second (Mbps) and have numerous protection features that make the device and the CAN network robust.SN65HVD23xt transceivers are designed for use with Texas Instruments 3.3 V µPs, MCUs and DSPs with CAN controllers or with equivalent protocol controller devices. The devices are intended for use in applications that use the CAN serial communication layer according to the ISO 11898 standard. The devices are designed for operation in particularly harsh environments and feature cross-wire protection, earth fault and overvoltage protection, overtemperature protection and a wide common mode operating range. The CAN transceiver is the CAN physical layer and forms the interface between the single-ended host CAN protocol controller and the differential CAN bus as used in industrial, building automation and automotive applications. These devices operate in a common mode range of -2 V to 7 V on the bus and can withstand common mode transients of ±25 V. The RS pin (pin 8) of the SN65HVD230 and SN65HVD231 offers three different operating modes: high-speed mode, edge control mode and low-power mode. The high-speed operating mode is selected by connecting the RS pin to ground, which allows the transmitter output transistors to be turned on and off as quickly as possible without limiting the rising and falling edges. The rising and falling edges can also be adjusted by connecting a resistor in series between the RS pin and ground. The slope is then proportional to the output current of the pin. At a resistance value of 10 kO, the device has a slew rate of ~15 V/µs and at a resistance value of 100 kO, the device has a slew rate of ~2 V/µs. The SN65HVD230 enters a low power standby mode (listen only) in which the driver is turned off and the receiver remains active when a high logic level is present on theRS pin. This mode offers lower power consumption than normal mode, but still allows the CAN controller to monitor the bus for activity indicating that it should return the transceiver to normal mode or edge control mode. The host controller (MCU, DSP) switches the device back to transmit mode (high speed or slope control) when it wants to send a message to the bus or when it receives bus traffic during standby mode indicating that it needs to be ready to transmit again. The difference between the SN65HVD230 and the SN65HVD231 is that in the SN65HVD231 both the driver and the receiver are switched off when a high logic level is present on theRS pin. In this sleep mode, the device cannot send messages to the bus or receive messages from the bus. The device remains in sleep mode until it is reactivated by applying a low logic level to the RS pin.
