5 V RS-485 transceiver with low power consumption
Description The ADM485 is a differential line transceiver suitable for bidirectional high-speed data communication on multipoint bus transmission lines. It is designed for balanced data transmission and complies with EIA standards RS-485 and RS-422. The part includes a differential line driver and a differential line receiver. Both the driver and the receiver can be activated independently of each other. When disabled, the outputs are three-stage. The ADM485 is powered by a single 5 V power supply. Excessive power dissipation due to bus conflicts or output short circuits is prevented by a thermal shutdown circuit. If a significant temperature rise is detected in the internal driver circuitry during fault conditions, this feature forces the driver output to a high impedance state. Up to 32 transceivers can be connected to a bus at the same time, but only one driver should be activated at a time. It is therefore important that the remaining deactivated drivers do not load the bus. To ensure this, the ADM485 driver has a high output impedance when disabled and when switched off, which minimizes the loading effect when the transceiver is not in use. The high output impedance of the driver is maintained over the common mode voltage range of -7 V to +12 V. The receiver includes a fail-safe feature that results in a logic high output state when the inputs are not connected (floating). The ADM485 is manufactured on BiCMOS, an advanced mixed technology process that combines low power CMOS with fast switching bipolar technology. All inputs and outputs are protected against ESD; all driver outputs have a high source and sink current capability. An epitaxial layer is used to protect against latch-up. The ADM485 is characterized by extremely high switching speeds. Minimal driver propagation delays enable transmission at data rates of up to 5 Mbit/s, while the low skew minimizes EMI interference. The device is fully specified over the commercial and industrial temperature range and is available in 8-pin PDIP, 8-pin SOIC and 8-pin MSOP packages with a small footprint.
